Design and Technology Major:

Intergenerational Centre

Description:

The Intergenerational Centre would be located in Hurstville which would allow older people and young children to interact in a common space by utilising indoor/outdoor areas. Featuring a range of activities aiming to provide an array of opportunities for intergenerational learning, enhance skills and knowledge socially, culturally and educationally.

Motivation:

I am very close to my grandparents who have looked after and guided me throughout my life, playing an important role as a grandchild from an Asian background. I have been exposed to the life of the elderly generation through my mum's work as she is a registered nurse, witnessing the different lifestyles and attitudes in nursing homes and age cares.

As Hurstville is an Asian dominated population from many immigrants, I want to raise the awareness and regain a sense of traditional relationships between grandparents and grandchildren.

Development:

I had a limited experience in architectural modeling and had to conduct multiple research, advice from online or professionals and experimentations to enhance my skill and understanding, however, had a strong talent with drawing.

I am very proud of my greater understanding of model making through youtube videos and having contact with architects through my teacher and improvement of skills through repetitively practicing and experimenting with cutting types manually and with CAD Programs/ Tools like Sketch Up, Illustrator and the Laser Cutter.

Additionally, I have made many efforts in communicating with people to enhance the quality of the MDP by contacting professionals, workers relating to the target market and the target market themselves through secondary research of existing designs and primary research with interviews and surveys. Feedback was used to maximise satisfaction and success.

In the end, I presented my major with three different model types through drawing, CAD and model making.
