Visual Arts Major:
"Who and Where?"
Description:
The series displays many shadowy figures with various different landscapes painted within and around them with the use of ink and paint.
Each piece explores the different connections between identity and landscape depending on the individual’s personal, emotional and physical experiences.
I purposefully designed my images openly for different audiences to interpret the drawings and paintings to their own context to create their own connection and story to the piece, so that they reflect on their own lives and experiences to the places they have been
Process of Developing Design Concept...
Who and Where? : "Free"
One of my weaknesses in art was working with very fluid substances, so working with ink was very difficult to overcome at first. Though along with my strength in drawing, usual precise and fine, I wanted to explore ink in relation to its mysterious and fluid nature.
I am proud to be able to use and manipulate ink in reflecting the flexible interpretation of audiences when making shadows. I practiced and asked for advice on techniques to paint solid figures proportionately and for skills and techniques to use when using ink. For example, I could adjust the intensity of the opacity of ink by adding water and using chalk to plan landscapes and change shape temporarily.
Who and Where? : "City"
Even though drawing was my strongest skill in art making I still had to practice perspectives and the effects of using different brushes and strokes. I used references to help make artwork more accurate, however, still used unusual placements to further conceptually engage and make artwork more unique. I was rushing a lot of my landscapes at the beginning, making the lines thick and uneven which distorted the image.
In the end, I learned to take my time to think and draw work to ensure that they are neater, clearer and helped me reflect and make the work more sentimental. Which made me more happy with the final submission.
Who and Where? : "Rose"
I am really happy with the conceptual engagement and fluidity of the artworks in the end for every individual. I am always fascinated and curious form of shadows that are always present in people's lives and how everyone is made up with different experiences and perspectives good and bad. Combining these concepts open the endless stories and ideas that people can gain from connecting with the work.
Through the development of my skills and referencing of my own images connects me to see the work big places that I have emotionally connected with. On the other hand, my friend sees the work all different. For example, the first image is a reference to the Philippine's Forest and how that place allows me to have a sense of freedom and openness from City life, though my friend is reminded of them going camping and even though it was beautiful it was always a forced decision by their parents.
